Britain has announced £100million in initial funding for a taskforce to help develop artificial intelligence models (AI) like ChatGPT for use in healthcare and education.
On Monday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan announced the start-up funding to accelerate the UK’s artificial intelligence capability.
This amount is on top of a £900million investment announced in last month’s budget for a new supercomputer to help British developers compete on the global market.
The money will be spent to develop foundation models, which is a category of artificial intelligence systems trained on huge volumes of data such as text, images, video or audio to gain broad and sophisticated capabilities across many tasks.
‘Harnessing the potential of AI provides enormous opportunities to grow our economy, create better-paid jobs, and build a better future through advances in healthcare and security,’ said Rishi Sunak.
In areas like healthcare, this type of AI has enormous potential to speed up diagnoses, drug discovery and development. In education it could transform teachers’ day-to-day work, freeing up their time to focus on delivering excellent teaching.
For example, teachers are already using AI to write students’ end-of-year school reports.
This technology is also predicted to raise global GDP by 7percent over a decade, making its adoption a vital opportunity to grow the UK economy.
The Taskforce will be modelled on the Covid-19 Vaccines Taskforce and is expected to develop the safe and reliable use of ‘pivotal artificial intelligence’ across the economy and help cement the UK’s position as a science and technology superpower by 2030.
It will be led by an expert Chair, who will be announced later in the summer.
Matt Clifford, Chair of the Advanced Research and Innovation Agency, will advise the Prime Minister and Technology Secretary on the development of the taskforce while the appointment is ongoing.
The announcement follows last week’s Cabinet meeting where ministers agreed on the transformative potential of AI, the vital importance of retaining public confidence in its use, and the need for regulation that keeps people safe without preventing innovation.
Last month, the government said it planned to split responsibility for governing AI between its regulators for human rights, health and safety, and competition, rather than creating a new body dedicated to the technology.
