Twitter CEO Elon Musk has expressed interest in the idea of making a dating app as part of the platform.
As if Musk’s Twitter hasn’t been chaotic enough lately, the billionaire responded to a tweet suggesting a dating app be built into the social media platform saying, ‘interesting idea, maybe jobs too’.
On Wednesday, a Twitter user called Steven Mark Ryan floated the idea for a Twitter dating app dubbed ‘Twinder’, as a superior alternative to conventional dating apps and hinted that it could ‘save humanity from extinction’.
‘When Twitter dating app? Might actually save humanity from extinction. Not even joking. Very low hanging fruit. Besides the ‘everything app’, I could make an entire video on how this opt-in app would work and why it would be ten times better than conventional dating apps. Twinder would be huge,’ tweeted the account which appears to be a Twitter Blue subscriber, meaning they’re paying $8 for a ‘verified’ blue tick.
Musk, who appears to be a subscriber of the account @stevenmarkryan, was quick to respond to the tweet, calling it an ‘interesting idea’.
The idea prompted mixed reactions from Twitter users. While some think it’s a terrible idea, other pointed out it would be a great way to meet like-minded individuals.
Some users even went on to share that they’d met their current partners on Twitter.
‘To the people loudly shrieking “no”, the operative term was “opt-in”. If you do not choose to be part of Twitter dating by opting in, you are not part of Twitter dating and your experience using Twitter would not change. I did not expect I would need to explain this.’ clarified @stevenmarkryan, urging Mus to ‘Do it :)’.
The tweet references Musk’s idea for an ‘everything app’ called ‘X’ that he has hinted about in the past.
While dating apps built into a social media platform is an uncommon concept in the West, you can find them on super apps, which provide multiple services within a single platform, in Asia.
Twitter would not be the first major social media platform to try out in-app dating features.
In 2019, Facebook Dating was launched which is similar to traditional dating apps. Just like Tinder or Bumble, users can swipe left or right on the Facebook Dating profiles of others nearby.
In 2021 Facebook started testing a new video speed-dating service called Sparked, which it shut it down in a year.
