After an eventful seven months heading Twitter, Elon Musk has announced that he’s hired a new CEO and reports point to Linda Yaccarino as the chosen one.
In his cryptic tweet announcing the change, Musk didn’t reveal any details about his successor except that the new head of Twitter was a woman and that ‘she will be starting in ~6 weeks!’.
While people started guessing the identity of the mystery woman, reports from the Washington Post suggest that media executive, Yaccarino is in ‘advanced talks about the position’ with Musk.
So what do we know about Twitter’s possible new CEO?
Yaccarino is the current head of advertising and partnerships for American media giant, NBCUniversal.
She has been on Twitter since 2012 and seems to be quite active on it. Judging by her tweets her interests include horse racing, her job, American football, fashion and Elon Musk.
The media veteran has also worked with Musk before, interviewing the billionaire at an advertising conference in April, sounding like quite the fangirl.
At the event, Yaccarino was all praises for Musk, even saying how she had ‘met her match’ in Musk’s rigorous work ethic.
The duo discussed the future of marketing on Twitter, including how excited she was for NBC to partner with Twitter for the next Olympics.
‘We can all agree … this freedom of speech, deserves a bit more reach,’ tweeted the NBCU exec, sharing the interview.
Yaccarino is certainly qualified for the job with her experience of overseeing 2,000 workers on a team that has generated more than $100 billion in ad sales.
That’s exactly what Twitter needs right now. She has led partnerships with Apple News, BuzzFeed, Snapchat and Twitter.
During her tenure, Yaccarino played a pivotal role in driving the company’s advertising strategies and forging partnerships with major advertisers. She is widely recognized for her expertise in the media industry and her efforts to innovate and adapt to the changing media landscape
According to her LinkedIn profile, Yaccarino is also involved with the World Economic Forum, WEF, where she chairs the organization’s taskforce on the future of work and sits on the media, entertainment and culture industry governors’ steering committee.
It’s also likely that the two see eye to eye on matters of free speech as Musk assured that the platform’s ‘commitment to open source transparency and accepting a wide range of viewpoints remains unchanged’.
The media executive’s professional background primarily lies in the media and advertising industry rather than the technology sector. So, if Yaccarino is indeed Musk’s successor, it could suggest a new direction for Twitter.
Her appointment could help assuage the concerns of advertisers, many of whom have abandoned the social media platform after Musk took control.
If she is the one, the reason we’ve not had a public announcement is likely because of conflicts with Yaccarino’s current job where she is set to host NBCU’s annual presentation to advertisers next week. A new job announcement ahead of that would be awkward.
On Friday, Yaccarino stepped down amid reports that she was Musk’s pick to lead Twitter. NBCUniversal said the executive was leaving, ‘effective immediately’, after 12 years with the media company.
