Apple has issued a warning for all iPhone users to update their iOS software immediately due to a live security threat among 15 urgent fixes.
The tech giant regularly rolls out updates for phones to improve functionality, fix bugs and patch security issues, but in the case of iOS 17.3, the new version is needed to plug a vulnerability already being used in real life attacks.
Apple has not identified exactly what the threat was, so as to prevent further attackers deploying the code before users have had a chance to update their devices.
‘Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited,’ the company said on its support pages.
However, it did reveal the issue is within its WebKit, the web browser engine used by Safari, Mail, App Store, and many other apps.
Three other WebKit flaws were also fixed, alongside updates to Safari, mail search and spellchecker.
The update comes just a month after Apple released another urgent update as part of iOS 17.1.2, needed to fix two ‘zero-day vulnerabilities’ in WebKit. These are issues that were previously unknown to the developer, meaning there is currently no defence against it.
Alongside warning everyone with an iOS 17-capable iPhone to update their device, Apple also released two updates for older phones to keep them secure – iOS 15.8.1 and iOS 16.7.5.
How to check and update your device
- Open the settings app
- Scroll down to ‘General’
- Tap on ‘About’
- If your iOS is up to date, the iOS version will be 17.1.2
- If your operating system is still 17.1.1, go back to ‘General’ and tap ‘Software Update’
- Underneath details about 17.1.2, tap ‘Download and Install’
- You’ll need Wi-Fi and at least 50% battery life, unless the device is on charge
- Users can also switch on automatic updates, so the operating system upgrades itself, usually overnight while the device is on charge
