WhatsApp users will finally be able to use their account on multiple devices with a new feature called ‘companion mode’.
Those who juggle two phones for work will know the struggle of having Whatsapp work on just one.
Until now, the messaging service did not allow users to use the same account on multiple devices but that might be changing.
The new dedicated ‘companion mode’ feature will allow you to use your account across multiple handsets without relying on the ‘Linked devices’ function.
First spotted back in November 2022, it was only rolled out to some Android users.
After months of testing with the limited pool of users, the new feature is rolling out for all beta users on Android.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp beta for Android v2.23.8.2 is widely rolling out the ‘companion mode’ to anyone currently enrolled in the program.
What is WhatsApp companion mode?
The new feature will allow users to use the same WhatsApp account on up to four phones at the same time, as reported by WABetaInfo.
All of your chats and group chats will be synced across the phones you link.
It’s different from the currently available ‘Linked devices’ function which only allows you to link your PC, laptop, tablet, or selected smart displays.
However the pairing mechanism is the same. Using the ‘Link a device’ option, you can pair your phone to a WhatsApp account using a QR code.
Both phones will need to be running at least WhatsApp beta v2.23.8.2 to be able to connect.
Just like the ‘Linked devices’ function, users can take and place calls, continue chats.
However, some features may still not be available, such as the ability to manage broadcast lists and post a status update from the linked device. Chat backups can also not be initiated using a paired phone.
Sadly, iPhone users will have to wait even longer as the new companion mode is only available to WhatsApp beta users on Android.
